La La Land: Flying off the Charts

A review of the new award winning album

The new soundtrack, composed by various artists including Justin Hurwitz and John Legend features a variety of different songs. It includes songs with piano solos, classic theater music, and smooth jazz. Many of the songs are sung by the two leading actors, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The album overall, takes a new perspective on typical theater music.

In the opening number, "Another Day of Sun" provides a happy and cheerful song that excites the listeners to hear more. In contrast to this, "Mia and Sebastian's Theme" includes a slow but increasingly fast piano playing giving off a melancholy feeling. The song has re-occurred not only throughout the album, but also the film. In another popular song, "City of Stars" is a duet by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling singing about their longing for each other. This was demonstrated by the tone and demotion in their voices. Their voices combined gives off a relaxing and calming vibe anyone will enjoy. "Here's to the Fools," another song on the album, delivers a more powerful message as Mia reminisces about her aunt telling her to follow her dreams and the lessons Mia learned.

The album has been nominated multiple times and won numerous awards including, winning an Oscar in original score and original song for "City of Stars." You can purchase the award winning album on iTunes.
