Chance the Rapper Wins Historic Grammy

At the 59th annual Grammy Awards on February 12, Chicago native Chance the Rapper (Chancelor Bennet) made history by being nominated for seven Grammys without a single record sold. This is the first year that Bennet is eligible for a Grammy. In years past, an artist had to have an album that was widely released and available for purchase to even be considered for an award. Chance the Rapper breaks the mold, however, all of his music is currently free to download and will be for the foreseeable future. Bennet took home three awards, the first for "Best Rap Performance" on the song No Problem featuring 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. He also won "Best New Artist in 2017" even though he has been releasing music since 2012. Finally, Chance the Rapper won the coveted award for "Best Rap Album" for his album Coloring Book, a gospel-rap fusion with a clear Christian message.
