M. Night Shyamalan’s New Movie Opens
Split, written by M. Night Shyamalan, tells the story of a man, Kevin, who is diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and chronicles how he abducted three girls. The film starts with Claire, Marcia, and Casey getting into a car ready to go home from a birthday party. Before they are able to leave, her father, whom was driving them home, never returned back to the car after putting something in the trunk. After sitting in the car for a few minutes, Casey comes to realize that a stranger, Kevin, is sitting in the driver's seat, and Kevin quickly proceeds to pepper spray them. The three girls soon wake up and realize that they have been kidnapped. The girls witness Kevin dressed as a woman, and then a few minutes later he emerges as a nine year old. This is the first sign to the girls of Kevin's mental illness, but it is not until later they realize the full extent of it.
The movie captures all of Kevin's 23 different and unique personalities. With each personality comes different traits and personas. His psychologist, Dr. Karen Fletcher helps him cope with his disorder. While still helping Kevin, she tries to verify her own theory of proving that mental illness patients are more superior beings than the average person.
Split has been in theatres since January 30 and received a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, reviewers have taken a liking to Split, characterizing it as a dark and twisted, rare horror movie.
