The critically acclaimed show, American Horror Story, has returned for its sixth season. It premiered on Wednesday, September 14. The theme for this season is Roanoke and is based on the Lost Colony of Roanoke, which is located in present day North Carolina.
The Lost Colony was among one of the first settlements in North America. The only distinct sign of the colony is the word Croatoan, found carved in a tree. Unlike past seasons, this one was filmed mockumentary-style and imitates the style of Investigation Discovery channel. Actors in this particular episode who have had reoccurring roles in the show include Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Dennis O’Hare, and Kathy Bates. Newcomers include Cuba Gooding, Jr. (known for playing OJ Simpson on American Crime Story), Andre Holland (The Knick), and Adina Porter (True Blood).
Roanoke evokes a “southern gothic” vibe. This season is more story driven than character driven, which is a fresh change from preceding seasons. Ryan Murphy presents the story in a new way, which seems like a promising start. The cinematography is still incredible as always, and there is a sense of eeriness present throughout the length of the episode. Expectations are high for this mini-series.
