Suicide Squad hit movie theaters August 5. The movie generated lots of publicity with its well-known cast including Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, and many more. The film is based on DC Comics Suicide Squad series. The main plot of the movie follows a group of villains being assembled to fight crime as expendable soldiers under the control of Amanda Waller, a government agent.
In the film adaptation, the squad is assembled after the reincarnated witch, Enchantress, begins to destroy Gotham in order to build a weapon to destroy humanity. The Squad is made up of the villains Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Slipknot. Other members include Rick Flag and Katana. Enchantress is unfortunately harboring June Moones’s body, who happens to be the lover of one of the squad’s leaders, Rick Flag. She is using her brother and her powers to turn humans into monsters in order to defend herself from the squad. Throughout the squad’s mission to stop Enchantress, they encounter run-ins with the Joker. Outside of this main plot, there are many flashbacks related to how each of the villains got captured and imprisoned in Belle Reve Penitentiary. The squad completes their mission once Harley Quinn takes Enchantress's heart and is defeated.
The movie seemed very promising, but unfortunately, in theaters, it did not meet expectations. The concept of Enchantress proved to be confusing and unauthentic. Enchantress, played by actor Cara Delavigne, was combined with CGI, and it made the character look extremely awkward on screen. While Enchantress assembled her weapon she performed a dance that prompted laughter. Though the flashbacks of the villains allowed you to connect with the characters, they often seemed out of place and confusing due to the complexity of these characters. Not all villains were given flashbacks which was unsettling and left plot holes. The movie plot was rushed and not cohesive. The film’s story line was a down grade from the classic graphic novels from which the film originated.
Though the movie was not of high standard, there were good moments of the film. The soundtrack of this film added a great dimension of excitement and a sense of modern day aesthetic. The characters of Harley Quinn and the Joker were authentic and showed a classic sense of DC comics. The movie had good moments, which were unfortunately outweighed by the bad. Suicide Squad left an unsatisfying impression, and would not be worth viewing twice.
